Kolkhorst Pushes for Grant to Help Pay for Local Murder Trials (AUSTIN, TX) State Rep. Lois Kolkhorst is hopeful that the Governor's Criminal Justice Division will step in to help pay for any local funding shortfalls in the upcoming Austin County murder trial in the Aug. 22 fatal shooting of Dr. Jorge Mario Gonzalez outside Bellville. Facing capital murder prosecution in the death of Dr. Gonzalez, 56, a pulmonary specialist who headed The Methodist Hospital's critical care section, are ranch hand Noel Cerna, 21; his brothers Cristobal Cerna, 23, and Moises Cerna, 18; and the Cernas' cousin, Misael Santollo, 18. The prosecution has gained a large amount of media attention due to the potential shortfall of local funds to pay for the trial. Kolkhorst, who represents Austin County in the Texas Legislature, said she has been in contact with the Governor's office about the county's predicament after concerns mounted about the cost of the trials. She specifically spoke with the Governor's Criminal Justice Division and has been encouraged that if a local application is submitted, then the state will work with Austin County to help secure funds from the County Essential Grant Program to cover trial costs. "Like everybody else, I've been concerned about this situation. Hopefully a state grant will help cover any costs that the county can't afford. I'm confident that if there's a local application for a state grant, then the Governor's office will be responsive. I've personally had positive conversations with Governor Perry's office," Kolkhorst said. "When you think about wise uses for tax dollars, this is at the top of the list. There shouldn't be a price-tag prohibition on justice being served."
